AN ENGLISH BOOK ON HONG KONG CULTURE AND A CHINESE BOOK ON THE AMERICAN DREAM ARE PERFECTLY WOVEN TOGETHER PAGE FOR PAGE.

I go to bed and say aloud:
‘I love you’
into this pillow with the thought that perhaps these reverberations might be
felt under your feet
while you are at work involved in the intricacies of your day
entirely opposite of mine

I wake up and walk the streets of Hong Kong
while you read yourself to sleep in our half empty bed 7000 plus miles away...
and now here I sit with my toes touching the edge of the Pacific,
connected to California and the rest of the coast

lit in only the light cast off from the bar behind me
I’m digging my feet into the sand...
and it just occurred to me that if only I should keep digging...
maybe I could meet you in time for dinner

and it’s this search for a balance
the one that might allow for the perfect integration of our entirely opposite existences
that keeps me occupied all day, your night
all night, your day
it is this work
this 1 in a series of works about the distance
from here to you
my wife
for which there is nothing more I could add
