A fossil is a history made tangible,

& the flesh is itself a written memory.

DNA, chromosomes, heredity. A species’

history is only as safe as its material body.

Bone, cartilage, sinew. So I say, "our language

is a species that will not be spared extinction."

This feral wind is an autobiography written

into the vertebrae of my aching fossil.
